Tax on Plastic Bags in NYC

By charging stores for plastic bags, they will no longer be free and people will carry reusable bags, saving plastic and the oil required to make plastic.

Advertising Campaign for "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle"

About 75% of what Americans throw away could be recycled, but the U.S. only recycles 30% of its waste. The government can create commercials and websites to persuade Americans to recycle more, reduce what they buy, and more often buy reusable products.

Tax on Carbon Pollution

Carbon dioxide is produced when energy is made from burning fossil fuels. Coal and natural gas would become more expensive leading more people to buy solar or wind power. Money made from the tax could be used to help low-income people pay their energy bills.

Advertising Campaign to Reduce Meat Consumption

The meat industry in the U.S. pollutes the environment more than all the cars in the country (Environmental Protection Agency). Raising cows and pigs, slaughtering them, keeping the meat cold, and transporting it uses a lot of energy. If more people knew about the environmental damage done by eating meat, people would eat less meat.

Tax Credits (Cuts) for Solar Power

Solar power is the energy of the future. Unfortunately right now it is more expensive than dirty coal and natural gas that is used for energy. If the government takes away taxes on companies that produce solar power it will make solar energy cheaper and more people will be able to buy clean energy.

Schools Should Compost Food Waste

Americans waste enough food every day to fill a 90,000 seat football stadium. American school children throw away an estimated 19% of their entrées, 47% of their fruit, and 73% of their vegetables. Currently that food ends up in landfills that pollute the environment. Compost means instead of throwing food away, you save food scraps and the scraps can be turned into fertilizer for farming. Composting saves significant greenhouse gases.
